PLACENTIA - Valencia coach Mike Marrujo was expecting a battle Friday night. Los Amigos is the consensus pick of the Garden Grove League coaches to win the league title. And traditionally, the Lobos, Marrujo said, always seem to make the Tigers earn every yard.

But in this nonleague game, Los Amigos' defense couldn't keep up with Wes Fletcher, Valencia's 6-foot, 180-pound sophomore running back. Fletcher rushed for 175 yards on 24 carries, including a 5-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, to help lead Valencia to a 28-6 victory. "The line blocked very well for him (Fletcher) tonight and opened up some pretty big holes," Marrujo said. "But he is a very hard runner."

Three of Fletcher's 12 carries in the first half were for more than 20 yards. In the second quarter, he sprinted 48 yards, giving Valencia (2-0) a first down at the Los Amigos 33. The Tigers failed to score on that drive. However, Valencia's first three possessions ended with touchdowns. Luis Cruz, the Tigers' senior quarterback, found Ray Magee in the end zone for two scores. Cruz completed nine of 13 attempts for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Magee led Valencia's receivers with 94 yards on five catches.

"We are 2-0, but we are taking everything one game at time. You have to do that," Marrujo said. "However, overall, I am happy with where the team is at right now." Los Amigos (1-1) struggled offensively, and its first four drives ended in punts.
But with nine seconds left in the first half, Manuel Castaneda ran around the left side of the line and into the end zone from the 4-yard line, giving the Lobos their only points of the game. Tim Niumata rushed for 59 yards on 12 carries to lead Los Amigos.
