PLACENTIA Alex Bernstein was at the right places at the right times Friday night, and he helped carry Yorba Linda to its first league victory in school history, a 12-6 Empire League triumph over Valencia at Valencia High.
The junior quarterback and defensive back connected with Paul Najarian for a 25-yard TD pass for the game´s first score, returned an interception 65 yards for another TD and picked off an overthrown ball on the last drive for the Tigers (0-2, 3-3) to seal the biggest game in the firstyear program´s history for the Mustangs (1-2, 3-4).
"It´s such a relief to get that first win," said Bernstein, who passed for 92 yards and rushed for 51 more on nine carries.
"They´re going to be our rivals for the next (several) years. It´s nice to get out there and take it to them ... everyone starts on both offense and defense. We´re exhausted, but we do it because we love this game."
