Half of Edison is plenty 52-14

PLACENTIA Edison simply had too much firepower for Valencia to contend with in a Southwest Division quarterfinal Friday night at Valencia High School. Top-seeded Edison scored 24 points in the second quarter to turn the contest into a rout by halftime , and when the final gun sounded, the Chargers advanced with a 52-14 victory. The 52 points are a season high for the Chargers (11-1).

"We wanted to get it going (early)," said Edison Coach Dave White - who won his 200th career game - of his team´s quick start. Edison (11-1) will play host to Foothill in a semifinal, which will be played Friday at Orange Coast College.

The big lead allowed White to remove quarterback Aleksander Torgersen and other skill players midway through the third quarter. Torgersen still completed 12 of 20 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns. Edison´s strength all season has been its defense, and that was the case again as the Chargers allowed two touchdowns - one coming late in the contest - for only the second time this season. The Tigers (8-4) started most drives deep in their own territory and rarely crossed into Edison territory.

Elijah Herrera´s 25-yard interception return for a touchdown gave Edison a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Toregersen´s 16-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Borkowski made it score 21-0 in the second quarter. Herrera scored again on an 81-yard reception from Torgersen to make it 35-7. One Valencia highlight was an interception and 22-yard return by Jake Watkins.
The interception set up quarterback Jesse Godoy´s 6-yard touchdown run, which got the Tigers on the board. White was given a plaque on the sideline in front of the Edison fans after the contest to commemorate his milestone. "This is for every coach and every player," White said. "It is a privilege and an honor to be at Edison High School."
